Ingredient Lists
Most of us just assume that when we buy food, like canned tuna, tomatoes, artichokes, or any other canned, frozen, dried or fresh food, that we are pretty much buying the main ingredient sometimes with a little added water. Actually if you don't read the list of ingredients on the back label, you could be buying a lot of extra ingredients you don't want. Much of these are added ingredients and chemicals that the food manufacturer thinks adds flavor to the food. The photo to the left shows two cans of tuna. On the front of the top can it says" tuna in water" and the bottom can says "tuna in spring water". On the back label the ingredient list tells a different story. The can on top also has vegetable broth, salt and phosphate added to it. The can on the bottom just lists tuna and spring water. The can on the bottom actually has 1-ounce more tuna and cost 40 cents less. It pays to take the time to read ingredient labels. Don't be fooled by the advertising on the front of the package, it's the back with the nutritional values and ingredients list that really matters.
