Healthy Plant Based Snacks

Think of healthy homemade snacks as an extension of a meal. These snacks are easy to make and easy to pack up to take on the go. Great tasting for kids and adults.

Apple Cinnamon Slices

These apple slices are amazingly good.

Thinly slice apples and generously sprinkle ground cinnamon on both sides. ​

​Fruit Kabobs
Wooden skewers are not a good idea for school, but you can use toothpicks and make mini skewers.

Alternate two or more variety of fruit on a skewer. ​

Fresh Fruit Cup
​Instead of purchasing pre-made fruit cups, use in season fruit. It will cost less, won't have added sugar and tastes much better.

1 cup of any fresh fruit combinations cut into bite size pieces.
  • cherries, strawberries, red grapes
  • peaches, blackberries, strawberries
  • bannas, guava, kiwi

Hummus and Vegetable Sticks
Everyone loves finger food and dips seem to make ordinary food taste better.

  • 15 ounce can garbanzo beans, drained, 4+tablespoons liquid from garbanzo beans, 2 tablespoons tahini. Blend in food processor until smooth. 
  • Add roasted garlic or red pepper. 
  • Serve hummus with a variety of vegetable sticks.

Hummus and Crackers/Pita
If you use pre-made hummus, look for one made without oil. Buy pita or crackers made with no oil or sugars.

  • 15 ounce can garbanzo beans, drained, 4+tablespoons liquid from garbanzo beans, 1 tablespoon olive oil, 2 tablespoons tahini-blend until smooth.

These easy to make roasted chickpeas make a tasty, healthy snack. ​

  • 12 ounces chickpeas and seasonings.
  • Roasted for 30-40 minutes at 400°.

Fresh peas and edamame are a tender and sweet.

Kids love bite size treats so use grape tomatoes if you can. Cut them in half for small children.

These are a great snack anytime and especially on the go.

Nut Butter and Veggies/Crackers
sUse store bought nut butter with no added oils or sugars or make your own, it's easy.

  • Place nuts in food processor and whirl until smooth.
  • Serve 2 tablespoons of nut butter and 5-7 celery sticks, whole wheat crackers, rice crackers, or other healthy choices. 

Trail Mix
Make your own trail mix using your favorite nuts, seeds, dried fruit and just a taste of coconut.

  • 1/4 cup mixed nuts and seeds (walnuts, almonds, peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds etc.) 
  • 2 tablespoons dried fruit (raisins, cranberries, pineapple, banana, or other fruit or berries), 
  • 1 tablespoon dried coconut

This is a wonderful snack food to keep around. It packs well and you can easily adapt it to what you have in your pantry.
