Homemade Green Bean Casserole
Wow, everyone loves traditional green bean casserole, now you can impress your family and friends by making this favorite side dish completely homemade. These homemade french fried onions also make great appetizers.
1 small onion, peeled, thinly sliced and separated into rings
1 cup low-fat milk 1/2 cup flour salt and pepper to taste canola oil |
1/2 pound fresh green beans, ends trimmed
1 tablespoon butter 1 tablespoon flour 1/4 pound mushrooms, thinly sliced |
- In a medium bowl, soak the onion rings in 1 cup of milk. (Reserve the milk for later, it will help add flavor to the sauce.)
- Mix the flour, salt and pepper in a separate bowl.
- Transfer the onion rings, a few at a time into the flour and coat each onion ring in flour. Set aside.
- Heat a frying pan with a 1/2-inch of canola oil over medium-high heat.
- Fry coated onion rings in batches about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown in color.
- Set on paper towels to drain.
- Place a steamer basket in in a saucepan with about 1/2-inch of water. When water boils, place green beans in pan, cover and steam for 8-10 minutes. Set aside.
- In a small saucepan, melt butter over low heat. Stir in flour until well mixed. Slowly whisk in reserved milk until thoroughly mixed.
- Add sliced mushrooms, stirring for 15-20 minutes until the mushrooms are cooked.
- Stir in half of the fried onions.
- Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.
- In a baking dish combine green beans and mushroom sauce, mixing well.
- Arrange the rest of the fried onions around the outside of the green bean mixture.
- Bake uncovered for 30 minutes.
